Damien Hirst @ Tate Modern

open post

I have never been that much of a fan of Damien Hirst in the past, but as is the case with many artists, when you hear about the motivation for their work, it makes a much bigger impact with an explanation. After watching comedian Noel Fielding being taken on a tour of the London Tate Modern on Channel 4, a trip to see the exhibition is definitely on the cards.

The most impressive piece on display will be the most expensive artwork ever made which is a diamond encrusted skull, titled ‘For the Love of God’ costing £14 million to make which you can see at the gallery.

Free Business Bootcamp on the Web

open post

Yesterday, we attended the government initiated Free Web Fuelled Business which is a free bootcamp for small businesses to get the most from the web. The speakers were fantastic, one was a former-Dragon from Dragons Den called Doug Richard and the other, James Dening, an ex-Amazon executive specialising in e-commerce.

The day covered all sorts of topics like SEO, using social media, google places, remarketing with Adwords and much more. One of the most interesting aspects of the day was learning how easy it is to set up an e-commerce store! Either using Amazon Marketplace or through your own domain using a website called Freewebstore.

Now we shouldn’t be promoting people to use sites like this as it takes business away from graphic & web designers although it’s coming more common that people don’t have the money when starting up and a DIY website will do until they are established. To build a large e-commerce website with a design company, will cost easily in excess of £1500 where you could potentially set up a web store in a couple of hours to test the market.

Probably the most important aspect of the day was SEO. It was referred to like having a shop on a street nobody walks down, if you are not visible, you have no shop. Recently, I have massively improved my SEO and have now started ranking at Number 1 on Google for graphic designers in london, london graphic designers & london graphic designer. After reaching number 1, attention has turned to more popular phrases such as brand design london & graphic design agencies london to start competing with some of the more established design companies. No doubt, before long, we will be up there for these phrases!

Testing Your Website Speed

open post

Do you want to know how not to lose customers from having a slow website? We recently stumbled across an article about How a Slow Website Impacts Your Visitors and Sales which goes into detail about the topic.

With everybody moving at a million miles an hour, waiting for a page to load can be one of the most frustrating things to deal with on a daily basis. The article goes on to say that if your webpage isn’t loading within 4 seconds, you dramatically start to affect your sales or conversions.

To help anyone with a website but especially sites with e-commerce, there is a fantastic online tool called Pingdom that assesses the average load time of any webpage and tells you what elements are taking the time to load. It even gives a performance score to inform you how much faster or slower you are than other websites on the internet. If your website needs speeding up, please e-mail us to discuss what we can do for you.

Helping Designers Quote

open post

Listened to a very interesting talk from Hans Wolbers who is the Creative Director at Lava Design Agency and I have redrawn one clever diagram that he drew up to help clients understand the design process. He tells the client that you can choose any two of the words from the triangle but you definitely don’t get the remaining one.

I think it would be a very useful tool for any graphic designer having the same problems with clients!
